Ken's Lab at UC Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory
Here I am at the controls of the Perkin-Elmer
590 Super Scanning Auger Microprobe. This instrument uses an electron beam to
probe the chemical composition of the first few atomic layers of a material's
surface.
In the near left foreground is the ultra-high
vacuum chamber, which maintains the specimen at a pressure of around 10E-9
Torr, about one-billionth the pressure we breathe here on earth.
